The Community Wellness Council's goal is to prevent substance abuse in our community and to improve the community's quality of life by fostering physical and emotional wellness.

Highlights of Accomplishments 2001-2002

The Community Wellness Council of the Bellmores and Merricks, Inc. originally was instituted by the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District board of education in February 1996 in response to a survey of students regarding their drug and alcohol use.  While the Bellmore-Merrick students throughout Nassau County, the board of education and parent leadership felt strongly that our communities must develop a united front to prevent substance abuse.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Coordinated a multi-organization Community of Caring effort to assist WTC families of the Bellmores and Merricks. 
Program components included providing information on available legal, financial and counseling services and short-term immediate funds.  Approximately 80 individuals and organizations participated in the project that raised over $40,000 for 27 families.

PARENT EDUCATION

Co-sponsored a Parent University programs attended by over 200 parents.  Parents heard presentations by parent educators Nancy Samilin and Margaret Sagarese and attended workshops related to substance abuse prevention and that furthered the purpose of the  character education components of the SAVE legislation.

DRUG FREE EDUCATION

Provide $10,000 for school-based prevention programs benefiting children in the five component school districts.  The project funded the purchase of equipment, resources and programs that promote team building, knowledge of the effects of drugs on the body, and the development of resiliency skills.

WELLNESS THROUGH EXERCISE

Conducted programs that promote healthy family-orientated activities through the 6th annual Walk for Wellness.

Promoted physical wellness by sponsoring PTA Walking Clubs for 800 children.

Sponsored exercise-a-thons providing $7,500 to 15 elementary schools benefiting 8000 students.

PROMOTING SAFETY

As member of health and safety organizations on a county and state level, the Council represents concerns of this community and brings back programs for implementation.

Co-sponsored a Kids Safety Center with Merrick Kiwanis at Merrick Kidsfest offering car seat and bike safety, skin cancer and abduction prevention.
Conducted a sports rage program with Legislator Dave Denenberg resulting in new legislation.

Provided smoking program at Regina Residence through a grand from the Catholic Health Services.

Provided stress reduction anger management training for high school students for peer leader program for middle school after school students.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Linked Merrick Kiwanis to Nassau County Department of Health Jello in a Jar bike helmet safety program.

Linked Chatterton School PTA with anti-bullying program.

Linked SAFE KIDS pedestrian safety program to Merrick School District.
